___________________________________________________________________ ABOUT THIS SITE This website was created by me (Erin McKenney) as a final project for Dr. Gretz's Phycology class during the fall 2007 semester at Michigan Technological University (www.mtu.edu) in Houghton, Michigan. All samples were taken from freshwater systems during our Tuesday lab sessions, usually around 2:00 pm. It could get pretty cold while we were out sampling (as it usually does in the U.P.) but we always found amazing algal species to look at when we got back to the lab. We used numerous books and websites to help identify the algae we collected, but please note that not all algae on this site are likely to be identified correctly as algal species tend to have many morphologies somewhat dependant on the environment in which they are found. I would like to particularly thank Jason Oyadomari for the use of his website in identifying samples, "Images of Freshwater Algae and Protozoa from the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan" If you are seeking other resources for Algae identification, there are many books that were also used in the creation of this site. Algae of Illinois by L.H. Tiffany and M.E. Britton (1952), Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification by J.D. Wehr and R.G. Sheath (2003) and A Manual of Freshwater Algae by L.A. Whitford and G.J. Schumacher (1973) are all helpful titles. The Textbook used for Dr. Gretz's course ("Algae" by Grahm and Wilcox) is also a great source for more information on Algae! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ | |||||||
