Phi
Sigma is a National Biological Sciences Honor Society, and is the only recognized
honor society for Biological Sciences. The purpose of Phi Sigma is to promote
research in the Biological Sciences.
In order to be a member of Phi Sigma,
students must meet eligibility requirements. These requirements include being
ranked in the upper 35% of the class with a minimum GPA of 3.0. These requirements
are advocated by the National Office, but other qualifications have been considered.
Outstanding undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty are selected
for prominent work in the various biological sciences and related fields. Phi
Sigma members pay a one time initiation fee for lifetime membership in the Society.
To fulfill our Society's Purpose,
the Beta Chi Chapter of Phi SigmaNational Biological Honor Society awards an Undergraduate
Research Grant every year. These grants are funded through fundraising events
sponsored by our members.
Phi Sigma members can attend various
formal lectures, visit research laboratories, and participate in
many social activities. Phi Sigma also sponsors and assists with
scientific endeavors both on and off campus such as departmental
exhibits, high school science teaching assistance, and diverse field
trip opportunities.
