Michigan Technological University, Chair of Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University invites applications for the position of Chair to begin in the 2008-2009 academic year. The chair will be responsible for managing the academic and financial affairs of the department, development and growth of our undergraduate and graduate programs, and resource development.  The chair is expected to maintain a dynamic research program compatible with departmental strengths in biochemistry and molecular biology, ecology and limnology, and the health sciences.

We seek an individual with the vision and experience to elevate the department’s prominence in biological research, further our strong tradition of educational excellence, and grow our MS and PhD programs.  The chair is expected to foster collaborations with other departments, centers and institutions; and advance the department’s position as a key player in life science initiatives such as sustainability and biotechnology.

Required:

• active and current research program
• academic rank of Associate or full Professor
• PhD in the biological sciences or a related area
• distinguished record of research and teaching
• evidence of leadership, and resource and personnel management
• history of extramural funding procurement
• excellent communication and organizational skills

Desirable:

• experience in program development and interdisciplinary activities
• commitment to the enhancement of diversity
• awareness of and openness to innovative teaching techniques

The Department of Biological Sciences consists of 17 full-time faculty members, nine adjunct faculty members in other MTU departments, seven full-time staff as well as a number of research personnel. The department offers 4 undergraduate degrees as well as the MS and PhD in Biological Sciences. We currently enroll approximately 280 undergraduate students and 21 graduate students, more than half of whom are PhD candidates. Approximately half of our undergraduate students are enrolled in medically related (premed and Clinical Lab Sciences) programs.
