The Michigan Tech Microbiology Club attended the Michigan Branch of the American Society for Microbiology Conference at The Crystal Mountain Resort, October 8, 9, & 10, 2004

  • A total of 11 people traveled to the Crystal Mountain resort (just south of Traverse City) to represent Michigan Tech. The Michigan Tech club was the group that traveled the farthest and had the most representation at the meeting.

  • Other schools that participated:
    MSU U of M- Dearborn
    EMU U of M- Flint
    WMU Delta College
    Wayne State

  • The conference/meeting consisted of 3 speakers:

    • Dr. David Mills (ASM Waksman Foundation speaker) (from UC Davis)"Dinner conversation for Biotechnologists: The Genomics of Wine and Cheese"

    • Dr. Kevin Short (from Pfizer) "Microbial Sterol Bioconversions"

    • Dr. Simon Silver (From U of Illinois)"Microbial Arsenic: From Genes and Enzymes to Geocycles”

  • Students were also given the opportunity to present posters of their research. Two students from MTU, Pengfei Song and Nicholas Ballor, had their posters judged.

  • At the conclusion of the meeting awards were presented. Pengfei took top honor with his research on: Identification of the Pyrene Degrading Dioxygenase in Pseudomonas putida Strain KBM-1. Pengfei was awarded a reference book along with other prizes donated by Sigma Aldrich.

  • MTU’s own Microbiology Club was also recognized and awarded a reference book for being the largest group in attendance and for travel the farthest distance.
