Dr. Nancy Auer
Research Associate Professor

Although born in New Jersey, Nancy grew up in Minnesota. She attended the University of Minnesota and received her B.S. in Biology in 1973. After taking a short course in water quality during the summer of 1973 at the University of Minnesota-Duluth she moved to Ann Arbor Michigan to begin her Master’s degree in Natural Resources at the University of Michigan. She completed her degree in 1977 and immediately began working for the Fisheries Laboratory of the Great Lakes Research Division. During her working years she edited and wrote portions of the Larval Fish Identification Atlas published by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
In 1981 she and her husband moved to Houghton, Michigan. She began her employment at MTU in 1984 as an adjunct professor. In 1989 she began a Ph.D. working on lake sturgeon ecology. She finished her degree in 1995 and remained at MTU as an adjunct research professor. Over the years she has supported herself and several Master’s students working on research projects involving larval fishes of Lake Superior and lake sturgeon biology for 17 years. She enjoys teaching and has assisted with the development of the freshman course – Perspectives on Inquiry. She coordinates the local Christmas Bird Count for the Audubon society and enjoys birding, quilting and reading. She lives on Lake Superior with her husband and welsh corgi, her son will finish his B.S. in December 2005.
