Biological
Sciences Fund
This Fund supports special project
needs in the Department. These are primarily student broadening experiences. Among
these are support for seminars, assisting undergraduate student participation
in research, and special student laboratory needs. In addition, this fund helps
the department leverage funds from elsewhere in the University for special projects,
for example this fund provided and thus leveraged dollar for dollar support for
the new Bioinformatics Laboratory equipment needed to support the new (2001) B.S.
degree in Bioinformatics. Increased support for this fund will allow for greater
student project support. Give

Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory
Science Fund
This fund supports special projects,
and recruitment for the Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Sciences program.
It supports student field trips to hospitals, provides for upgrades in the CLS
laboratory, augments support for CLS professional visits to campus, and provides
the base for an active departmental recruitment program in Medical Technology/CLS.

Bio-Athlon and Outreach Endowment
The Bio-Athlon is a Biology competition
for high school sophomores held each May. As many as 24 high schools participate
from across the western upper peninsula for a day of using their skills and knowledge
to solve biological problems. The competition involves solving problems in clinical
lab sciences, diversity, ecology, dissection and physiology among others. Now
in its 14th year many high school teachers use the team selection process (4 sophomores
per school) as a means to motivate their students throughout the school year.
All participants receive a highly prized Bio-Athlon T-shirt and the top three
teams receive acknowledgment through the local media (TV, radio and print), U.S.
savings bonds and certificates. The current endowment needs to double to cover
half the costs associated with this activity.

Phi Sigma Society Fund
Phi Sigma is the National Biological
Student Honorary Society. Students in the MTU Beta Chi Chapter support undergraduate
research awards to Biological Sciences and Clinical Lab Sciences students. Phi
Sigma raises funds through book sales and occasionally a winter carnival activity.
Designation of contributions to this fund will help Phi Sigma in its mission of
supporting student scholarship within the Biological Sciences.

Kathy Jean Jensen Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established
by gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Jensen in memory of Kathy Jean, a 1974 Medical
Technology graduate. The endowment has grown under the leadership of Dr. E. Michael
Balok and his wife Amy through the generous contributions of former recipients
of the award, alumni, and friends of the Department of Biological Sciences. The
scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior or currently enrolled student majoring
in pre-med studies with a 3.25 minimum grade point and not receiving any other
scholarship. Donations to this endowment will allow the scholarship amount to
increase, with a goal of providing full tuition support for an academic year.

MTU Medical Alumni Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship endowment is supported
by alumni and friends in various medical professions. The purpose of the scholarship
is to provide support to senior students in either Biological Sciences or Clinical
Laboratory Sciences who have a minimum grade point of 3.25 and provide evidence
of intention to pursue a clinical career. The endowment is three-quarters of the
way towards its initial goal. Give

Jack Holland Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship in honor of Dr.
Jack Holland, Professor of Medical Technology (1966-1988) is awarded to the outstanding
freshman Clinical Lab Sciences major, based on professional attitude, communication
skills and academic grade point. The endowment was originally set up by former
students upon Dr. Holland's retirement. Donations to the endowment will allow
the award to assist with a greater portion of the selected sophomore's tuition.

Medical Technology "Tech
Is" Award Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was originally
funded by the three monetary awards received by the Society of Medical Technologists
first place awards in the "Tech Is" student competition (1981, 1983,
and 1986). This student activity "Tech Is" program no longer exits.
The endowment provides a small scholarship to a Junior class student based on
participation in the Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists (formerly Society
of Medical Technologists), extracurricular activities, grade point and faculty
interview. Contributions to the endowment would allow the scholarship amount to
increase.

Designating Your Gift
Thinking about designating your next
gift? You need to specify where your donation to the Tech Fund is to be designated.
Specify your wishes when you donate, even via phone solicitation, or designate
your pledge. You may split your gift among several support areas. Any of the funds
listed above as well as others can be specified.
If 100 alumni who were only capable
of donating $25-$50 per year were to designate their donation to
a department designated fund or endowment, the base would grow $2,500 to
$5,000 each year. If they did that each year, in ten years an endowment
could increase by $50,000.
You would be creating a great legacy
for future MTU Biological Sciences and Clinical Laboratory Science students.
Thank you for all your many and various
contributions to Michigan Tech. |
