Bryophyte
Ecology:
Janice Glime's textbook on Bryophyte Ecology
Research
Description:
Dr. Glime
is the department's resident bryologist and conducts research
on the effects of various pollutants, temperature and other
human disturbances on mosses, as well as conducting research
on bryophyte physiological ecology and the role of mosses
in ecosystems
Plants
are often sensitive indicators of environmental pollutants
and bioassays are conducted in laboratory facilities that
simulate natural environments by using numerous temperature,
humidity and light controlled incubators.
Dr. Glime
holds the position of Associate Editor for the Journal of
the Hattori Botanical Laboratory, is the founder and manager
of Bryonet-l (the internet discussion group sponsored by the
International Association of Bryologists), is a member of
the Council for the International Association of Bryologists,
is Judge of Elections for the American Bryological and Lichenological
Society, and is a member of the web site committee for the
Botanical Society of America. In addition to bryophytes, her
primary interest is in training college teachers and in improving
college level teaching, to which end she has developed her
own text for botany, laboratory manuals for organismal biology,
botany, and bryology, and is writing a textbook on bryophyte
ecology. She established the Department of Biological Sciences
Learning Center and serves as its faculty director.
