Tech's Department of Biological Sciences is located in the new,
$44 million Dow Environmental Sciences and Engineering building
which it shares with the Departments of Geology and Civil and Environmental
Engineering. This multi-disciplinary teaching and research center
provides the focus for faculty, individual departments and multi-disciplinary
groups searching for solutions to the environmental problems of
the 21st century.
The Department of Biological Sciences
consists of 16 full-time faculty members, 9 adjunct faculty members from other
departments, 5 full-time staff, as well as a number of Research Scientists and
Associates and Post-Doctoral research personnel.
The
Department's 360 undergraduate and 30 graduate students pursue BS,
MS and Ph.D. degrees in the Biological Sciences or Clinical Laboratory
Sciences (MS in Clinical Laboratory Management) with teaching and
research being conducted in the areas of Health and Physiology,
Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Ecology and Botany.
These areas are supported
by new Plant, Environmental and Microbial Biochemistry laboratories,
Terrestrial and Aquatic Culture facilities, a spacious rooftop greenhouse,
new Microbiology, Physiology, and Molecular Genetics laboratories
together with state-of-the-art computing facilities, darkroom, instrumentation
rooms and media preparation facilities.
