Next Step?
There has never been a more exciting
time to become a biologist. Rapid advances in molecular biology and the mounting
urgency to better understand the global ecosystem are converging to provide challenges
for biologists in all disciplines. As our knowledge advances, advanced education
at the graduate level becomes more and more necessary for a career in the biological
sciences. MS and/or PhD degrees are now required for most positions in industry,
government, and universities.
Michigan Tech's Department of Biological
Sciences has a group of fourteen faculty and approximately thirty graduate students
who interact in a vigorous, well-funded program of graduate study and research
leading to both MS and PhD degrees. Students work with their graduate committee,
made up of four faculty members, to plan the details of their course work and
research.
The graduate program in biological
sciences frequently draws upon additional expertise in the areas of forestry,
chemistry, mathematical sciences, and civil and environmental engineering. Combined
with invited speaker series and journal clubs, these interdisciplinary interactions
contribute to the stimulating intellectual atmosphere that makes graduate study
a special time in career development.
I encourage you to look through the
following pages to learn about the opportunities offered by our graduate programs.
We make a special point of being available to students for career discussions,
both for current students and for those who may be interested in becoming students.
