The Michigan Tech Graduate School

Michigan Technological University has a proud tradition of excellence in science and engineering education. Since its charter in 1885 by the state of Michigan as the Michigan Mining School, Michigan Tech has expanded its education and research role in science and engineering to include graduate programs in all of the major science and engineering disciplines.

The graduate programs at Michigan Tech are administered by the Graduate School under the direction of the Dean of the Graduate School (who is also vice provost for research) with the advice of the Graduate Council. The council, comprised of elected members of the graduate faculty, helps to ensure the high quality of the graduate program and assists the dean in developing Graduate School policies and in administering of graduate programs.

The graduate faculty is the subset of the University faculty that has been nominated for graduate faculty status by the department head and by the dean of their College or School. This faculty also includes adjunct faculty whose expertise gives each program additional breadth and depth. Only graduate faculty members are eligible to teach graduate courses (500 or 600 level), serve as examining members on MS and PhD committees, and supervise MS and PhD students.

The graduate programs consist of the discipline-oriented master's and doctoral degree programs of the University's Colleges and Schools as well as nondepartmental doctoral programs. The graduate degrees offered at Michigan Tech are listed on page i of the Graduate Student Bulletin. Research is an integral and necessary part of graduate students' activities. Graduate students receive research guidance and supervision from faculty advisors and graduate committees. Administrative assistance relating to research may be obtained from the Research Services Office.
