Financial Aid -
With few exceptions, all graduate students in the Department of Biological Sciences receive financial aid. Support is available in four forms: graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs), graduate research assistantships (GRAs), fellowships, and special University doctoral fellowships.

Students supported by graduate teaching assistantships help teach laboratories for undergraduate courses. Students supported by graduate research assistantships aid in specific research projects, which often are also their thesis projects.

Students supported by fellowships have various duties depending on specific terms set by the funding source , but generally have a great degree of independence in how they allocate their time. Each of these three forms of support provide a stipend currently set at $7,500 per three terms for MS students and $8,700 for PhD students, plus tuition. The special University doctoral fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis within the University, and provide approximately $16,000 per year in support. Summer support is usually available at a comparable support level.

All applicants whose files are complete by February 1 will be considered for graduate teaching assistantship support. Each graduate research assistantship is assigned to a specific graduate student by the faculty member in charge of the particular research project. Applicants interested in graduate research assistantship support must contact individual faculty to discuss the availability of such opportunities. Application files must be complete by February 1 to be considered for fellowships. Applicants are welcome to inquire about support at any time, but all applicants will be notified concerning the availability of financial support on or about April 1.

For more information concerning financial support, contact the director of graduate studies.

The director of graduate studies will be pleased to supply more-detailed information about specific departmental requirements, procedures, and research. For more information about Michigan Tech's Graduate School, contact the following:
