Class Description Fall 2007 - Section R51
Title: Gender in the Modern World
Students in this course will explore changing concepts of gender from the
mid-20th century to the present day with an emphasis on the last 15 to 20 years.
They will consider how these changes might directly affect their daily lives,
crtically examining and documenting experiences and local observations of
gender. The American experience will be compared with examples from other
cultures. Students will examine the diversity of gendered experience
including non-traditional notions of masculine and feminine, and explore the
idea that gender is a fluid category that individuals negotiate and renegotiate
over the course of a lifetime.
