Class Description Fall 2007 - Section R35
Title: Minds and Machines
Science fiction has become fact: due to great technological
advances, we now live in a world of intelligent machines. This raises
intriguing and important questions:
- How do human intelligence and machine intelligence differ?
- Can machines actually be conscious?
- What are the benefits and risks of relying on machine intelligence?
- How do our notions of morality, ethics and compassion extend to the
possibility of conscious machines?
Thinkers, writers and filmmakers have long been imagining and
exploring the consequences of machine intelligence. We will use their
work to guide us into this wide-ranging and ever-changing area.
