Class Description Fall 2007 - Section R27
Title: Can We Read the Cultural Landscape?
We are surrounded by the ordinary landscapes of everyday life. Examples
include homes, classrooms, streets, farms, historical monuments, or
satellite dishes. "Cultural Landscape" refers to the interaction of
people and place: humans and the social spaces they shape and from which
we derive a shared cultural identity. Can we learn to read the landscape
as a means of understanding how Americans shape ordinary landscapes and
experience the ordinary (not always the same thing)? As students of
cultural landscapes we will explore these questions through readings,
fieldwork and site visits, visual display, oral presentations, and essay
and report writing.
