Class Description Fall 2007 - Section R24
Title: Our Universe in Perspective
Studying the origin, evolution and structure of our observable physical
universe cannot be dealt with solely on the basis of scientific analysis.
We must extend our inquiry beyond the realms of science to cultural and
philosophical reflections. From Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Descartes
to Einstein, Sagan, and Hawking, cosmology has always been explored in
tangent with the beliefs and values held by society. This course will ask
students to participate in these inquiries, raising questions regarding
humanity's place and role in the vast universe, while investigating
recent developments in cosmology.
