Class Description Fall 2006 - Section R44
Title: Perspectives on the U. S. Supreme Court
The United States Supreme Court is a remarkable institution, having unique authority and influence on American social, economic, and political culture. We will critically analyze this authority and influence by examining the following question: What is the proper role of an unelected judiciary in a democratic society? Through a series of case readings, essays, and audios of actual oral arguments presented to the Court, students will explore how the justices
balance historic Constitutional principles with continuously evolving societal values and expectations. Students will acquire a greater understanding of the significant role the Court has in shaping the world in which we live.
