Class Description Fall 2006 - Section R23
Title: Nature, Landscape, & the Environment
This course will explore the ways society has been shaped by, responded
to, and created ideas about beloved spaces. Through a variety of lenses in
the sciences, humanities, and fine arts - and a good bit of time outdoors
ourselves - we'll seek answers to some of the most persistent questions
plaguing our relationship with the natural world. What do we mean
when using words like natural or wild - where and by whom can these things
be found? What meaning can we discover in a particular cultural response
to the natural environment? How have/should/could humans live on Earth?
What are the possibilities and limitations of our various visions?
