  Class Description   Spring 2006 - Section R01

Title:   What is Intelligence?

What is intelligence? Is it innate or acquired? Are there different kinds of intelligence, for example, different cultural standards of what counts as intelligence? How do factors of race, class, and gender affect intelligence? How do we test intelligence, how do we use such tests, and what is missed when we test for intelligence? How intelligent are other primates and what are the criteria by which we measure this? How does artificial intelligence compare to human intelligence? We will consider these questions from a variety of perspectives: sociology, neurology, biology, education, linguistics, anthropology, primate studies, AI/computer studies, statistics, cultural studies, etc.
