Class Description Fall 2003 - Section R62
Title: Our National Parks - History and Ideals
We will focus our inquiry on the history, related issues and the ideals
that our National Parks represent. The National Parks of the United States
represent a nation's commitment to preserve what it means to be an
American. There are nearly 380 park units from the great scenic parks of
Alaska and the west to the many historical parks in the east in the United
States. This course will be an effort to understand the political,
historical, and social context of these important Federal lands. Topics in
this course will include conservation vs preservation, the role of tourism,
resource use, and ecosystem vs political park boundaries.
