Update on Gen Ed Responsibilities
(September 2007)
Brad Baltensperger, chair of Cognitive and Learning Sciences, will be director
of general education during the 2007-08 academic year.
He takes over from Vice Provost Mary Durfee, who will be on leave. "Brad brings
many years of experience to this position," Durfee said. "He has long been
involved in General Education and has served as coordinator for World Cultures
since 2001, which often has top-rated sections according to student
evaluations."
Baltensperger will chair the General Education Council, serve on the University
Assessment Committee and be the course coordinator for Perspectives, World
Cultures and Institutions.
Professor Randall Freisinger (Humanities) will coordinate UN2001 Revisions.
Associate Professor Heidi Bostic (Humanities) will coordinate the World Cultures
modern language option.
Professor Robert Keen (Biological Sciences) will continue to chair the Perspectives subcommittee and to maintain the Perspectives website.
Administrative Associate Helene Hiner (Provost's Office) will continue in her
duties. Petitions to Alter Degrees for General Education should be submitted to
her. Hiner will continue to assist with Perspectives proposals and sections and
sign-offs for class restrictions on UN1001, 1002 and 2002. Any faculty
interested in teaching Perspectives may contact her at hthiner@mtu.edu or Keen at rekeen@mtu.edu.
