Clinical Laboratory Science -
Medical Technology Programs

1The Michigan Tech Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology Program prepares students for exciting careers in medical diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical laboratories, medical research, laboratory management, technical support and sales of medical equipment and diagnostic instrumentation, teaching, graduate or medical school, and many other career opportunities.

Currently our graduates are receiving employment offers at salaries of $40,000-$55,000. Because Clinical Laboratory Science is a growing field and since there is a current critical nationwide shortage of certified medical laboratory personnel, job offers have been plentiful for our graduates.

1In the challenging and rewarding arena of a hospital diagnostic laboratory, our graduates develop and perform laboratory test procedures that are used to verify health, diagnose or monitor disease, make or test new medically related products, or contribute valuable information to research projects.

As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist works closely with physicians in collecting information needed to maintain health and provide the best care for ill or injured patients.

A Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for the operation of complex analytical instrumentation and computers, and is also highly skilled in staining cells and tissues, microscope use, interpreting test results, precision pipetting, administration and management, and quality assurance.

Comments from our alumni and an alumni survey confirm that a baccalaureate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from Michigan Tech provides thorough preparation for numerous and diverse career opportunities and can also serve as an excellent pathway to graduate studies or medical school.

Michigan Tech has offered strong and versatile degree options of study in Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology since 1958. It is one of the largest programs in Michigan, but consistently offers specialty courses with small-to-medium sized lecture and laboratory sections allowing all students easy access to their teachers.

Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) students at Michigan Technological University may choose from seven options of study within the CLS Program. You will work with your advisor to develop a course plan for completing the option you select.

The faculty are nationally certified, have clinical experience, are enthusiastic teachers, and find working with students to be very rewarding. The Clinical Laboratory Science Program Director also serves as the student advisor and is available for both academic advising and career development.

The CLS curriculum offers up to date coursework in clinical immunology and serology, diagnostic laboratory instrumentation, molecular biology techniques, genetic techniques, clinical laboratory administration and management, and core concept integration and application, as well as the traditional core of courses in medical microbiology, hematology and coagulation, blood banking and clinical chemistry.

In addition, students who desire research experience have numerous opportunities to work with members of the faculty, and a laboratory safety program is emphasized in all student and research laboratories. Michigan Tech also offers several biological societies and clubs for interested students who want to interact with their peers and the faculty, to learn about their chosen profession.
