My research in environmental microbiology involves studies on the ecological roles of microorganisms and uses of microorganisms to address pollution concerns. Related studies in microbial toxicology assess the mutagenic properties of airborne, water, and soil pollutants. I'm studying root-associated bacteria to characterize the physiological and molecular basis for stimulatory and inhibitory effects on growth of mycorrhizal fungi and trees. I'm also investigating the capabilities of microorganisms to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons in soil, including production of mutagenic metabolites.
