Course Objectives and Philosophy

This course is designed to impart a fundamental understanding of protein structure, mechanisms of enzyme catalysis and regulation, enzyme kinetics, and the theory behind many biochemical laboratory procedures involving proteins. Proteins are the main focus of the course; however, basic information regarding lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids will be discussed. The information in this course is required for understanding metabolic processes covered in BL4020.

As your professor, I will endeavor to assist your understanding as much as possible; however, the primary responsibility for learning and understanding the material in this course is yours. I will use a mixed format of lecture and discussion in this course. We will cover material not in the text. Evening review sessions will be offered before exams. Please see me if you are having difficulty.

 

 

 

Course Policies and Grading

Regular attendance is encouraged. The course schedule and content are subject to change. Students are responsible for all materials covered in class and in the text, including supplemental material not in the text.

There will be three examinations, including the final. In general exams will be non-cumulative; however, be aware that new material will build on previous concepts and information. All examinations, including the final, will be worth 100 points. There will be group presentations during week 15 worth 50 points. Additional points will be awarded for impromptu assignments such as but not limited to: pop quizzes and writing assignments. Grades will be determined from the total possible points using a 10 point scale.

A=9.0-10.0, AB=8.5-8.9, B=8.0-8.4, BC=7.5-7.9, C=7.0-7.4, CD=6.5-6.9, D=6.0-6.4, F<6.0

Final Exam: Thursday, December 18 st from 8-10 am location to be announced.

Makeup exams: Make-up examinations will be given only for absences excused according to University policy and may be in an oral format at my discretion. Students with special requirements should inform me promptly so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
